Can Archean Impact Structures Be Discovered? A Case Study From Earth's Largest, Most Deeply Eroded Impact Structure

چکیده
The record of terrestrial impact events is incomplete with no Archean structures discovered, despite the expected abundance collisions that must have occurred. Because been identified, necessary conditions to preserve an structure longer than 2 Byr are unknown. One significant effect shock metamorphism physical properties target rocks change, resulting in distinctive geophysical signatures structures. To evaluate preservation potential structures, we deeply eroded Proterozoic Vredefort examine changes and remnant signature compare results well-preserved Chicxulub structure. major structural features similar profile at a depth 8–10 km. rocks, while shocked, do not measurable their properties. gravity minor controlled by collapsed transient crater rim uplifted Moho surface. We anticipate erosion additional 1 km would remove evidence impact, regardless initial size, >10 result removal most for any from geological record. This study demonstrates identification geologically old (i.e., Archean) limited lack associated craters.

Yarrabubba, Western Australia: a Large, Deeply Eroded, Ancient Impact Structure in the Yilgarn Craton
Introduction: Shock-metamorphic effects including shatter cones, planar deformation features (PDFs) in quartz grains, and both E-and S-type pseu-dotachylites were discovered in deeply eroded Ar-chean granites near the Yarrabubba homestead in Western Australia (119°50'E, 27°10'S). Preliminary estimates indicate that the Yarrabubba impact structure is of a Paleoproterozoic age and at least 30 km ...
متن کاملMorphometry and Structure of Eroded Complex Impact Craters: a Parameter Study Us- Ing Hydrocode Modeling
Introduction: Most impact structures on Earth are modified by erosion. First order structural features of impact craters such as the crater diameter, the size of the central uplift, and ring syncline can be measured in field campaigns [e.g. 1] or by geophysical explorations [e.g. 2,3]. However, these quantities deviate from the original crater diameter or other morphological features of the pri...

We agree with Glikson [1] that the identification of Precambrian impact deposits is an important and largely unresolved problem, and thank him for providing us with an opportunity to further discuss our mineralogical and geochemical results [2] on the enigmatic spherule layers in the Barberton Mountain Land of South Africa. We note, however, that unfortunately Glikson has not been able to name ...

BACKGROUND Although colorectal cancer death rates in the United States have declined by half since 1970, large geographic disparities persist. Spatial identification of high-risk areas can facilitate targeted screening interventions to close this gap. METHODS We used the Getis-Ord Gi* statistic within ArcGIS to identify contemporary colorectal cancer "hotspots" (spatial clusters of counties w...
